The 2022 VolksWagen Taos joins the burgeoning compact crossover segment with plenty of technology and space.

Automakers have embraced the notion that more is better, resulting in tiny crossovers that are anything but tiny.
However, new entrants like as the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Kia Seltos are helping to rightsize the segment. They're so-called "goldilocks" models, which are both affordable and not excessively huge or little.

The 2022 Volkswagen Taos, which sits underneath the Tiguan and starts at a modest $22,995, is the latest crossover to join the group. The Taos will go on sale in the United States next month, and based on our little time with it, it appears to be a promising model.

The Taos is another entry-level crossover that isn't recognised for its appearance, and it won't be turning any heads. While the vehicle isn't very attractive, it's well-equipped, with plastic body cladding, roof rails, and faux silver skid plates.

A sculpted hood, an unique front fascia with black accents, and a three-bar grille unite them. Squared-off wheel arches, pronounced character lines, and a gently sloping roof are also significant features. Furthermore, even the entry-level model includes LED illumination and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The Taos' dimensions are 175.8 inches (4466 mm) long, 72.5 inches (1841 mm) wide, and 64.4 inches (1636 mm) height, with a 105.9-inch wheelbase (2689 mm). This makes it 9.3 inches (236 mm) shorter than the Tiguan, though their wheelbases are only 3.9 inches (99 mm) apart. The Taos is also larger than the Trailblazer and Seltos due to its ample dimensions.

A lot of tiny crossovers sacrifice on interior quality and equipment to keep pricing low. The Taos, on the other hand, is equipped with an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, push-button ignition, and a 6.5-inch infotainment system as standard equipment. The higher-end models go even farther, with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a bigger 8-inch infotainment system.

The $995 IQ.Drive S package adds a blind spot monitor, front assist, emergency assist, travel assist, and lane assist to the entry-level Taos, keeping with the tech theme. A rear traffic alert system and an adaptive cruise control system with a stop-and-go function are also included in the package.

The Taos has a few unique features, such as two-tone seats with grey contrast stitching, that show that the designers didn't merely focus on technology. This adds to the cabin's upmarket atmosphere, and buyers may opt for high-end features like heated and ventilated front seats.

Front-wheel drive models had a load capacity of 27.9 cubic feet (790 litres), which can be increased to 65.9 cubic feet (1866 litres) by folding the back seats down. All-wheel-drive vehicles have a load capacity of 60.2 cubic feet, which is slightly smaller than front-wheel-drive ones (1705 liters).

Given the low price, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the inside isn't extremely opulent. However, the material quality is acceptable, and the Taos has a well-designed cabin. There's a tiered dashboard with an upholstered accent as well as a big stretch of shiny trim on the latter. A superb three-spoke steering wheel, high-quality switchgear, and metallic highlights are also available to drivers.

A good engine and transmission are proper.
