In new teaser images, the 2022 Opel Astra shows off its face and digital cockpit.

Opel has unveiled the first set of teaser photographs for the all-new 2022 Astra hatchback, displaying the VW Golf-rivaling hatchback's new Mokka-inspired appearance.

The new Astra will, predictably, get the current "Opel Vizor" treatment up front, with LED headlights with narrow DRLs and a black panel between them for that signature Opel design.

In addition, the new Astra's cabin will feature Opel's "Pure Panel" digital cockpit, which pairs two widescreen screens in a horizontal style aimed towards the driver under fully glass surfaces. Opel also claims that the number of physical controls has been reduced to just the basic tasks, with "finely carved keys," new ergonomic front seats, and a redesigned steering wheel.

The remarkable look of the forthcoming Opel Astra isn't the only attraction; the new Astra will also be available with an electrified powertrain, most likely a plug-in hybrid, in addition to petrol and diesel engines. There are also rumours of a more powerful plug-in hybrid with all-wheel drive and 296 horsepower.

The new Opel Astra is built on PSA's EMP2 platform, which is also used in the Peugeot 308 and other cars. According to Opel, it will be offered in hatchback and estate body types.

“The future Astra will usher in a thrilling new chapter in our compact class model's 30-year history,” says Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller. “We are optimistic that the next-generation Opel Astra will create a strong first impression and attract a large number of new Opel Astra customers.”

The all-new Opel Astra will be produced at Opel's factory in Russelsheim, Germany, starting this year.
