Cupra and Seaqual Initiative have teamed up to bring recycled plastic to the Born. The seats in the electric hatchback are made of Seaqual Yarn, a recycled polymer fabric with integrated headrests and side bolstering. Seaqual Initiative, which works with local people, fishermen, officials, and NGOs to make the environment a better place, sourced the material from plastic harvested from oceans, seas, rivers, and estuaries.
“We're entering a new electric age with the Cupra Born, our first 100 percent electric vehicle. Cupra's Director of Strategy, Business Development, and Operations, Antonino Labate, said, "The collaboration with Seaqual Initiative to build the seats for this new model shows that sustainability, creativity, and contemporary design are a perfect combination." “Cupra is a brand that inspires the world from Barcelona, which is why we are dedicated to circular-economy initiatives and the preservation of a natural resource that is very dear to us, the Mediterranean.”
The Born is the first Cupra to be delivered with a net CO2-neutral definition, in addition to being their first EV. The model is made in Germany at the Zwickau factory, which uses renewable energy in its supply chain and raw material processing. The remaining emissions, according to the Spanish company, are "offset by environmentally and project investments accredited to the highest standards."
The Born will make its official debut on May 25, but we already know that it will resemble a more youthful version of the platform-sharing Volkswagen ID.3, dressed in Cupra and adorned with the iconic copper accents. The 77 kWh battery, sourced from the ID.3 Pro S, is expected to power a single electric motor in the rear-wheel-drive configuration, allowing for a 500-km (310-mile) range. Later on, more agile versions should be released.
